Zuverlässig and Verlässich
The main two words in the German language to describe a person or object as “reliable” or “dependable” are zuverlässig and verlässlich.
Reflexive
In order to say “to rely on something” one would normally use the reflexive construction sich auf etwas verlassen.
Note: However, “to be reliant on someone” (financially, for example) in German is auf jemanden angewiesen sein.
Examples
Mein alter Wagen ist immer noch total zuverlässig/verlässlich. My old car is still totally reliable.
Der Fritz ist in letzter Zeit nicht mehr so zuverlässig/verlässlich. (That) Fritz has not been so reliable lately.
Ich verlasse mich voll und ganz auf dich. I am fully and totally relying on you.
Du kannst dich nicht mehr auf ihn verlassen. You can’t rely on him anymore.
Wir sind nun auf externe Hilfe angewiesen. We now have to rely on external help.
